A far-from-chance meeting between atheist Bill Maher and practicing Catholic Stephen Colbert recently resulted in a mini-debate.
Maher, host of HBO’s “Real Time,” peppered his guest spot on “The Late Show” with words against “mainstream” ideas propagated by some religionists. The
ideas that Maher particularly referred to are anti-feminist and anti-gay ones.
Colbert countered with a question about whether Maher ever gets invited to dinner parties during which it is impolite to discuss “sex, politics or religion.” One thing
led to another, and soon the fur was flying.
Colbert: If you’re wrong, you’re an idiot, but if I’m right, you’re
going to hell.
Maher: …my response to that is not to just make up silly stories,
or to believe intellectually embarrassing myths
from the Bronze Age, but you believe whatever
you want to.
Some might change the channel at this point. Others might applaud this grappling diversion from network television’s usual drivel.
