As the world mourns the presumed loss of “the greatest free diver in history,” some might be wondering what made Natalia
Molchanova engage in such risky activity.
She herself provided the answer to this question. The New York Times reports that Molchanova had explained, “Free diving is not only a sport, it’s a way to understand who we are.”
She went on to contrast the thinking-based life with the be-here-now one. Molchanova had said, “When we go down if we don’t think, we understand that we are whole. We are one with the world… We need to reset sometimes. Free
diving helps do that.”
In whatever world Molchanova is currently at one with, may she find the peace that passeth thinking, the wholeness she was willing to give her all for.
