In his OpEdNews
article "God Killed Jesus: That's What the Gospels Say," Starr begins his analysis with this conundrum: How could the Jews have killed
Jesus when all of his followers were Jewish? He goes on to explain that "there would be no Christianity
if not for Jews who embraced Jesus and his
teachings."
Nevertheless, the belief that the Jews killed Jesus lingers on – often in a virulent anti-Semitic manner. Not
only that, this belief
encompasses all Jews everywhere – then, now, and always.
Starr logically points out that this would be akin to stating that since one American killed Abraham Lincoln, all Americans from that time on are guilty of his death and should be severely punished.
Those who don't blame the Jews tend to blame the Romans instead.
Not all Romans, mind you (that could be awfully sticky for the Vatican) - but the Romans in power at that time… Although many biblical scholars adhere to this theory that the Romans did it, there is "no historical
evidence of even a single incidence of marauders storming a village crying, 'Execute those Roman killers of our Lord'…" Only
Jews have suffered the vicious consequences of that particular accusation.
Starr comes to the somewhat unsettling conclusion that it was actually God who killed Jesus. He cites one Gospel passage after another to support this assertion. For example,
John 3:16 (NIV) states that "God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son…" Romans
8:32 (NIV) agrees that God "spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all…" In John 10:18 Jesus says this about the laying down of his life: This commandment have I received of my Father.
