Just what is this faith that underpins the essentials in Griffin’s life? Les
Carpenter of Yahoo! Sports relates how it all evolved.
While praying for 10-year old Griffin, Bishop Nate Holcomb placed his palm on Griffin’s head and “felt a surge he’s never been able to adequately describe.” Bishop Holcomb then told Griffin’s parents:
The hand of God is upon him. And God wants to shoot
him as an arrow from his quiver. Bishop Holcomb, who wasn’t particularly well-versed in sports, then added: He will
do it through athletics.
Jim Denison of The
Christian Post reported that Griffin was well known at Baylor University (where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science with a GPA of 3.67 in only three years) for his faith - as well as for his athletic achievements (which included setting 46 records, and winning the Heisman).
Denison also reported that Griffin attended University Baptist Church while he was at Baylor.
The University Baptist Church (UBC), Waco, Texas states that its mission is “to embody and communicate a refreshing hope discovered through following God in the way of Christ.” UBC goals include reaching younger generations, living in the world without becoming of the world, seeking direction from the historical Christian community, experiencing God in a balanced way that is not overly emotional or
intellectual, and being authentic with God and others.
