Masked Details

On the first day of his statistics course, a professor announced, “Statistics don’t lie, but liars use statistics.”

All too true, especially when bias enters the equation.  This seems to be the case with a conclusion that was recently arrived at.  After sampling just 25 elders, researchers allegedly determined that wearing a mask does not lower oxygen-saturation levels “in older patients.” 

Would that be in all older patients, or in just 25?  And how were these participants chosen?  At random, or from a group of select seniors?  How long were they monitored for?  An hour?  An afternoon?  A day?  So many details to (hopefully) carefully consider…
