Upstanding Player

Leonard in 2019 (Frenchieinportland)

NBA Restart games often begin with kneeling for the National Anthem.  Although this resonates with many a participant, it does not necessary resonate with all.

Meyer Leonard of the Miami Heat was one of those who chose to stand.  His brother is a Marine, and a number of his friends are Navy Seals.  Leonard thought long and hard about this decision and discussed it with teammates.  He finally decided upon a both/and approach, rather than an either/or one.  In his own words, "I am with the Black Lives Matter movement and I love and support the military..."

For Leonard, kneeling is neither literally nor figuratively a black-or-white matter.  He prefers to honor both worlds and believes that there is room for individuality in doing so.
